  • Variable Voltage vs Variable Wattage

As of the end of September, we at Volcano will be introducing our brand new, variable wattage, Lavatube 2.5 (http://www.volcano-ecigs.co.uk/lavatube-2-5-kit.html). Now if you’re like me and not altogether too sure of what all these different technical terms mean then don’t worry, I’ll explain to you exactly why we’ve made the change and the benefits that you will receive.

First of all you will need to know that our previous Lavatubes were all Variable Voltage. Now this was great as it gives users the ability to modify the output of their devices so that it burns the e-Liquid at exactly the right temperature for them. Everyone has their personal preference when it comes to this as some like their flavours more intense, some prefer something a bit mellower. Whatever you like you’ll set your device to give you the best result.

Both Variable Voltage and Variable Wattage allow you to do this but in different ways. The best analogy I can think of to describe this would be the difference between an automatic and a manual car, one you have to change the gears manually whilst the other does this without you having to do a thing. Allow me to use a comparison to explain.

Imagine two devices being used by the same vaper with a 3.0 ohm cartomizer. This vaper knows exactly how they enjoy their vaping experience and so sets their device accordingly. Now with the actual vaping experience there is absolutely no difference. Our imaginary vaper enjoys their E-Liquid exactly as they like it, burning at exactly the right temperature. Then comes the time when the cartomizer needs to be changed. At this point our vaper fits a new one into their TubeTank, no problem.

With the Variable Voltage device the vaper must now check the cartomizer, which may or may not be at the exact resistance (Ohms) as the previous one. Even if it has changed by 0.1 they must now play around to find the exact ‘sweet spot’ for vaping again (as several circuit values have changed: the change in Ohms means a change in Amps – the volume of electricity). The Variable Wattage (VW) device doesn’t have this problem as once you have set the wattage (Amps x Volts) to your preferred settings it will make the necessary adjustments for you, making sure you always vape at the right power (Watts) specifically for you.

I hope that explains this rather technical issue for you, enjoy your vaping!

  • Reasons Why Electronic Cigarettes Work

I recently read an interesting study in the Addiction Science and Clinical Practice journal (found here http://www.ascpjournal.org/content/pdf/1940-0640-8-5.pdf), in which a study showed five main reasons why E-Cigarettes work in helping people make a healthier change from smoking tobacco. In my opinion this study seems to be more about personal opinion as well as scientific fact but nonetheless I was inclined to agree with their points. I'll sum up the five main reasons here and you can draw your own conclusions.

    1 - Bio-Behavioral Feedback

Possible one of the more complicated titles but actually the simplest of reasons. The fact is that vaping is a lot like smoking in the way that it works. Not necessarily the fact that most Ecigs are shaped to look like analogue cigarettes, it's the way you inhale the vapor that has a direct correlation. The way the vapor hits the back of your throat before you inhale it is the same feeling that makes smoking so satisfying sometimes. It's why switching to vaping is so easy for smokers compared to other alternatives.

    2 - Social Benefits

One of the first things I knew once I became a vaper was the amount of other people around me doing it to. When you type Ecigs in to Google one of the very first results is ECF (E-Cigarette Forum http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/) and that's just the icing on the cake when it comes to forums, blogs, case studies, chat rooms, all geared towards Ecigs. The amount of online support and information to help new and old vapers alike is both staggering and reassuring.

    3 - Hobby Elements

Ecigs aren't just about vaping and getting your fix of nicotine; if you want to you can turn it into so much more. It's all about the variety of products you can try, the flavours that you can purchase and create through mixing. You want something a little different? The mods on offer are endless, and endlessly fun. Vaping is something you can just have fun with, a reason to eagerly await the post.

    4 - Personal Identity

The word I've been using frequently in this article, Vapers, gives us a personal identity. It stops us looking at Ecigs as merely a way to quit smoking and see it for what it truly is, it's own thing entirely. This is a healthier alternative to smoking, not an off-shoot designed merely to help people quit. The term Vaping shows the rest of the world this fact (even if a large part refuse to admit it).

5 - Difference between smoking cessation and nicotine cessation

As a smoker, when you turn to nicotine patches or gum to help you quit you're aware that this is only a temporary fix until full, cold turkey. This works for some people who really do want to give it up completely but many find themselves falling off the wagon. Many smokers also have no desire to give up nicotine even though they wish for better health. Vaping is sort of the best of both worlds. Don't fancy giving up nicotine? Want to improve your health? Here's the thing for you.

    What us your name?

    Michael Skeates

How long have you been vaping and how long have you been using Volcano?

Almost a year now. Pretty much started with Volcano after trying one of those cheap Ecigs from a petrol station.

What products do you currently use?

I just switched to the Inferno. I was originally using Magma which was easy to use but I wanted something that would give me a little extra power. I’ll have to see how it goes.

What’s your favourite product from Volcano?

Well Magma at the moment but the Inferno might change my mind.

What are your favourite flavours we do?

    Shaka strawberry

When did you decide to become a vaper, and how has it changed your life?

About a year ago I realised I was smoking too much and my lungs were paying the price. Since starting to vape it’s really helped my general health and fitness levels. I also love the flavours!

Have you ever fallen off the wagon and gone back to smoking? If so what’s your current smoking situation?

Maybe once or twice on a night out at first but not anymore.

How much money do you think you’ve saved by taking up vaping instead of smoking? Do you do anything interesting with the extra money?

I’ve probably saved loads by now, I’ve noticed much more money turning up in my pockets these days. I’ve not done anything huge with the savings yet but a holiday would be nice.

What are your goals with vaping? Do you plan to quit altogether or remain a vaper?

I think I’ll keep vaping. It’s really fun playing with the flavours and I don’t see any reason to stop.

What would you say to people thinking about making the switch to vaping?

Do it! Especially if you’re a smoker, you’ll notice a huge different to both your health and your wallet.

  • Possible Australian Ban on Cigarettes

Whether this is completely true or not still remains to be seen but I've come across a couple of different sources today stating that the Australian government could be thinking about a possible ban on cigarettes in favour of allowing E-Cigarettes if they're found to be a healthier alternative.

According to The Age National, this ban could happen in 2015 if a study being funded by an NHMRC (National Health and Medical Research Council) project grant proves that Ecigs are the better way to go. Now since this study isn't being funded by the Australian government it can't be verified whether they are seriously considering this tobacco ban but it looks like all the components are there.

As Australian vapers will know, their government isn't the most tolerant bunch when it comes to ecigs and many vendors have been told they're not allowed to be selling E-cigarettes with any sort of nicotine in. As you can imagine this becomes a bit of a problem for most people interesting in making the switch from analogue cigarettes. So this move would be enough of a U-turn that it may be a slight exaggeration of the actual situation.

However, if this does prove to be the truth then the news looks hopeful for our Ozzy cousins. Every test has found E-Cigarettes to be safer than conventional cigarettes, so it seems very likely that this test will find the same results. Could this prompt a change in attitude from the government? We can only watch, wait and hope.

  • Radio 4 Debate

I've linked a clip from a debate on Radio 4's Today show. On it we have an introduction to Ecigs, followed by a debate from Katherine Devlin, president of the Electronic Cigarette Trade Association, and Jeremy Mean from the MHRA. Now for most of us who have been vaping for some time the first part won't be of much interest as it doesn't cover anything new; but the debate is very interesting indeed. Unfortunately it's not as long and detailed as I might have liked but each side really does get to voice their opinions, and personally I think Katherine Devlin did a fantastic job voicing our side of things.

Make sure you take the time to listen and if you have any thoughts then tell us about them on our Facebook page and Twitter account.

  • Vaping on the Train

Many a time I've been sitting on the train, wiling away a long and tedious journey by vaping on my Inferno. Very pleasant it is to, I've even converted a couple of hardcore smokers who were very jealous I was inhaling my nicotine whilst they had to wait until well out of the station. It's one of the many advantages of vaping over smoking and I must say it's a pretty great one at that.

Now, however, I read that many train companies are looking to stop us vapers from using our E-Cigarettes whilst travelling. Most of them don't seem to give any excuse whatsoever, and those that do state many odd reasons that don't seem to have much weight. I heard one company saying that they thought allowing people to vape on the train might encourage smokers to light up in the carriage. Really? I would have thought the large NO SMOKING signs may have put them off a little more.

In fact I was almost kicked off the train a week or so ago as I argued to the stupidity of the rule with the conductor who told me to put me Ecig away. Even shoving the Inferno in his face and demanding he tell me how anyone could mistake that for a regular cigarette. I realised this wasn't getting me anywhere just in time to stop myself being thrown bodily through the window, but I feel my point was justified.

It's yet another discrimination of vapers from the powers-that-be. It goes along with the ridiculous decision from Wetherpoons to do the same. As sad as it may be to admit, I think we can expect the same thing to be happening a lot more frequently as the war of the EU bans carries on.

  • Customer of the Month - Richard W

    Customer of the Month Questionnaire

    COMpic

    What is your name?

    Richard W

How long have you been vaping and how long have you been using Volcano?

12 weeks, and I’ve been using Volcano juices for 10 weeks, and their devices for 8.

What products do you currently use?

A Lavatube II and 7 ml Tube Tanks.

What’s your favourite product from Volcano?

The above. It’s an awesome piece of kit.

What are your favourite Volcano flavours?

Menthol Burst, Cherry Lava, and Pineapple. My favourite is Menthol with a few drops of Cherry Lava – a perfect combo.

When did you decide to become a vaper, and how has it changed your life?

It’s my 40th earlier this year, including kicking a 19 year 20+ red Marlboro a day habit. And I have to say, vaping has changed my life for the better. Firstly, and from a physical point of view, no more hacking cough, a much larger lung capacity, no more tar stained fingers or teeth, and a new and acute sense of smell and taste. I feel much fitter and healthier, and can train harder and for longer. As a result I’ve lost a load of weight, which I know isn’t always the case for most smokers giving up the fags. And on a personal note……whilst I’ve never had any problems in the ‘trouser department’ – I can happily report increased performance down there (especially in the morning). Good job I’m booked in for ‘the snip’. in November, and with that landmark looming I decided to make a few important life changes

Secondly, and from a mental point of view, I feel good about myself, and the support and congratulations of friends and family reinforces that. I always smile to myself when I go to the supermarket and don’t feel compelled to buy a box of 20!

Have you ever fallen off the wagon and gone back to smoking? If so what’s your current smoking situation?

No. This is my first attempt at giving up the smokes, and as far as I am concerned they are kicked for good. Vaping is such a good alternative and I have no desire whatsoever to go back. I can’t vouch for alternatives such as patches or lozenges as I’ve never tried them.

How much money do you think you’ve saved by taking up vaping instead of smoking? Do you do anything interesting with the extra money?

A lot. 30ml of juice cost £15 and lasts me approx. 10 days. Last time I looked a pack of 20 Reds was £8.40. The kids spend the spare cash, whether I like it or not!

What are your goals with vaping? Do you plan to quit altogether or remain a vaper?

I’m a very happy vaper, and very content with my new status quo. Therefore, no plans to change that at the moment, but you never know…

What would you say to people thinking about making the switch to vaping?

Give it a shot, as you have nothing to lose. If you can cut 1, 2, 10, or all of your traditional cigarette intake then you are making a change for the good. Hopefully the benefits I have seen are testament to that.

Anything else you’d like to share with us?

I can thoroughly recommend Volcano. I’ve tried a number of e-cigs over the last 3 months, but I can’t improve on the vape from a Lavatube and Tube Tank. Great products and first class customer service.

  • Finally, a good article on Vaping!

I always make sure to keep abreast of what the media have to say about E-Cigarette's, I find that although sometimes I want to scream in frustration it is a great way to know what those outside the vaping community think . If you follow us on Facebook and Twitter you'll see that I'll occasionally share my finds with the world, be they good or bad. Rarely, however, do I actually come across something that really speaks for the vapers of this country.

Yet scrolling through the BBC about a month ago I came across this fantastic article (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-23196369). At first I have to admit I was fairly skeptical as often I will find a great piece that will start off well then begin to cite 'research' proving that the E-Cigarettes should be wiped off the face of the earth before they corrupt the hearts and minds of our young. By the time I reached the end I was thoroughly impressed with what I had read. It seems as if the author, William Kremer, has spoken to users and found out for himself what it means to be a vaper and why we take it up in the first place.

Personally it's the first time I've read an article in the mainstream media that has made the point that nicotine by itself is not very dangerous, nor is it likely someone will overdose on it, especially via E-Cigarettes. This is even backed up by Maciej Goniewicz from Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York - an oncologist who has analysed e-cigarettes and the vapours they produce. There's also a few other researchers in there whose voices haven't been heard too loudly recently in the broadsheets, but who nonetheless help show Ecigs in a much better light.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the article and applaud Mr Kremer for giving us vapers more of a voice against the hyped up negativity helping to slap on the EU restrictions. Have a read and let me know your opinions.

  • Celebrities and their Ecigs

So there I was, watching crap TV (New Tricks) and to my pleasure I see THE Dennis Waterman using an E-Cigarette. It was an exciting moment as it would seem that many and more Ecigs keep appearing on my screen, and mostly in a positive light. What with the EU bans and bad publicity that has been put out it's great to see a popular program advocating it's use as a healthier alternative to smoking. Admittedly I think he threw it away at the end but for me just seeing it was enough to reaffirm my faith in our societies burgeoning acceptance for vaping.

I then thought about other celebrities I have seen vaping. I read somewhere that the first real sign of celebrity vaping was Katherine Heigl's great interview with David Letterman two or three years ago. It was some very obvious product placement as Letterman eagerly gave it a try only to tell the audience how great it was but it was out there and that was enough. Plenty of celebrities have jumped on the bandwagon since. So far I believe a whole host of famous people from both sides of the pond we call the Atlantic have been spotted vaping.

Personally I've been thinking this is great, especially from a marketing point of view, once a lovely young man like Robert Pattinson has been vaping away for the world to see it's hard to stop the rush. Yet talking to a couple of people in the Ecig community it's become clear that not everyone finds this a good thing. If you look closely at what these A-listers are actually vaping on looks to be the rubbish, cheap Ecig that you could pick up in any petrol station or drug store. So, whilst it's great to be getting exposure it's as if those affected by it are being pushed towards the lower end of the market. Those of us who know what's available find this a little shocking as you would have thought that the ultra-rich of Hollywood would have been able to get hold of the top-of-the-range gear. Some say that this promotes a bad image and anyone affected by it will only go for the rubbish E-Cigarettes and quickly get put off vaping. That actually these celebrities are doing more harm than good to the cause.

Personally I still think it's a great thing that these celebrities are giving E-Cigarettes some great exposure, especially at such a critical time for the industry. Even if those following the trends start off with the cheap, rubbish Ecigs, I feel that as long as they're getting in to it then there can't be a problem. As long as those of us in the industry are doing our best to promote the next stages to vaping, and the places to get the better products, then actually celebrity culture is giving people an entry into it. We all started somewhere to get where we are today, and by getting the general public involved even at the bottom end we can help build the vaping community.

  • Tips and Tricks

To follow our Tips and Tricks posted through Facebook and Twitter, here is our blog spot for all your helpful hints for vaping. Every few days we'll post some great new things for you to try but feel free to post anything you've found yourself in the comments section and we'll add it to the list.

    Tips and Tricks for Vaping

    - An easy one to start things off. It can be difficult pouring your E-Liquid without spilling it and wasting precious Juice. A great way of avoiding this is to get yourself a needle-tip bottle cap. They are very cheap but very effective, and can be very necessary for filling things like Clearomizers.

    - Here's a great tip we found for resurrecting a spent Atomizer. Whilst it's always better to simply replace them, sometimes this can be useful for when you're waiting for a new order and need one right away:

    1. Get rid of any excess juice by blowing it out.
    2. Rinse it with water and blow it out afterwards (Doesn't need to be dried overnight).
    3. Connect it up to your battery of choice (preferably something with a higher voltage).
    4. Keep the button pushed down until the Atomizer's insides grow orange from heat (not too hot, as in white hot).
    5. Once it is then you will need to cool it. Let off the button and blow the inside from a distance, to flash cool it.
    6. Repeat the 4th and 5th step about 5-10 times. Once you have it dry it should begin to glow a lot quicker.
    7. Once at this point begin to pulse the Atomizer. Press and release the button at a rate that maintains the orange glow for about 20-30 seconds, making sure it doesn't go red/white hot otherwise it'll pop.
    8. Once this is done repeat steps 2-7 one more time.

This should give you an Atomizer that works as good (if not better) than new. It's very easy to pop an Atomizer doing this until you're used to the method so do be careful. There's also no need to remove the wick during this process as it'll clean along with everything else

    - Some people like to leave their new E-Liquids to 'age' after they first get it. Apparently, like a fine wine, it can improve and strengthen the flavour. It's under debate as to whether it matters if the lid is left off but you can try each way for yourself to find the best result.

  • CUSTOMER OF THE MONTH - BRIAN

Our brand new Customer of the Month:

    Brian Tomlinson
    What is your name?
    Brian Tomlinson

How long have you been vaping and how long have you been using Volcano?
I’ve been vaping and using Volcano products for three years.

What products do you currently use?
I use a LavaTube II with Volcano brand MEGA Clearomizers and full strength BlueWater Punch and Vanilla Bean e-juice.

What’s your favourite product from Volcano?
My LavaTube II, it’s a beast!

What are your favourite Volcano flavours?
BlueWater Punch and Vanilla Bean.  They are strong enough to taste, but in no way overwhelming.  My wife says that she can catch a slight whiff of them and that they smell pleasant.

When did you decide to become a vaper, and how has it changed your life?
I decided to start vaping after I found out that my children had developed asthma despite my best efforts to never smoke in their immediate vicinity.

Have you ever fallen off the wagon and gone back to smoking? If so what’s your current smoking situation?
Three times and only for a day or two at a time.  The only reason why these events happened was because I had not timed my orders properly and ended up running out of juice or usable cartomizers/atomizers before my shipments had arrived.  Each time I resorted to analogue cigarettes or cigars while awaiting a shipment, I’d end up vomiting.

How much money do you think you’ve saved by taking up vaping instead of smoking? Do you do anything interesting with the extra money?
I’d guestimate thousands, I was a very heavy smoker before vaping.  Any money saved from no longer using analogues ends up going toward small trips to fun places for the kids, new computer hardware, or (now) savings.

What are your goals with vaping? Do you plan to quit altogether or remain a vaper?
I have no intention of quitting vaping.  There’s no harm being done to myself (other than the effects of nicotine, which are almost no different from the effects of caffeine), there’s no harm being done to the people around me (studies confirm no second hand nicotine), and with all of the negative aspects of smoking not being at all apart of vaping, there’s no real reason to cease what is an enjoyable activity and conversation starter.

What would you say to people thinking about making the switch to vaping?
Do it! Sure, the first two weeks will be a bit rough (I went “cold turkey” from analogues to ecigs) but the benefits are readily able to be seen, felt, and smelled.  Do make sure that you go with a high quality brand like Volcano, the quality of hardware has a lot to do with the vaping experience.  Other “good selling” brands may not provide high quality batteries, or worse, atomizers/cartomizers, which means that, regardless of ejuice strength, the hit you get won’t be at all satisfying.  Spend the extra few bucks on the initial investment of a great piece of hardware from Volcano, as well as the recommended accessories, and you’ll find yourself a much happier camper.

Anything else you’d like to share with us?
Volcano rocks! Your service is top notch, you provide your products to a wide audience, and the quality of your products ought to be the bar that all other providers seek to exceed, if they aren’t already. Thank you also for being able to ship out here to Norway, you guys are lifesavers!

Thanks Brian! Until next month Vapers!
  • Customer of the week - Richard

Vaper of the Week - Richard

    What is your name?
    Richard L. Yates

How long have you been vaping and how long have you been using Volcano?
    Two months.

What products do you currently use?
    Inferno with TubeTank and cartomizers.

What’s your favourite product from Volcano?
The Inferno e-cig itself, plus the Cherry Lava and Grape eLiquids.

What are your favourite Volcano flavours?
Cherry Lava, Grape and Waikiki Watermelon.

When did you decide to become a vaper, and how has it changed your life?
I decided to become a vaper when I came to the UK to visit my mother who has had a heart attack and therefore couldn’t smoke. It’s saved me a fortune, and also I no longer need to withdraw myself from places to have a cigarette. In addition, I’ve found out how bad the smell of cigarettes and smokers is.

Have you ever fallen off the wagon and gone back to smoking?
If so what’s your current smoking situation?
I only had a cigarette when I was out for a day and could not charge my e-cig, and that was very frustrating since I now find the taste of cigarette makes my stomach turn.

How much money do you think you’ve saved by taking up vaping instead of smoking?
Do you do anything interesting with the extra money?

We have sat and calculated the costs and in one year we will save 4,290.00 pounds. In the past two months I’ve saved 280 pounds. Have not yet done anything with the extra money.

What are your goals with vaping?
Do you plan to quit altogether or remain a vaper?
I’m going back to Brazil and I intend to carry on vaping despite the fact that in Brazil cigarettes are quite cheap; and also smoking is allowed in most places.

What would you say to people thinking about making the switch to vaping?
    DO IT!

Anything else you’d like to share with us?
Great customer service provided by the Volcano Team, who’ve been very helpful and kind. Everything I needed to know about vaping has been perfectly explained. I highly recommend Volcano e-cigs as an alternative to anybody wanting to quit smoking or even improving their health.
